“Look, Grandma, the red light is glowing. Jesus is in the gold box.” Those are the words I’ve heard many times since explaining to my granddaughter what the tabernacle is. I often wonder just what she imagines is in there. Does she picture the hosts in the tabernacle or the Man on the cross folded into the box? What does she understand when I tell her the Man on the cross comes down from Heaven and enters the little pieces of bread and the cup of wine, turning them into His Body and Blood?
Wonder and Awe
I love watching Evelyn learn about the Lord with such wonder and awe (my favorite Gift of the Spirit since childhood). She spots every crucifix wherever she goes. She shows us Mary and Joseph and recognizes the Holy Spirit. At her brother’s Baptism in March, she took her friend Eleanor (daughter of the Godparents) on a tour of “Grandma’s church.” They both pointed out everything they recognized and could name. I delighted in their knowledge, realizing they are just beginning their faith journey.
